Chequers

While the Prime Minister discusses Brexit at her country retreat known as Chequers there is a wild food which shares its name. The wild service tree is also known as chequers and its small dry fruit can be fermented into a drink but are generally not good to eat as they are.

One of the largest service trees I have seen for a long time. They are fairly uncommon nowadays but where they are found they are a good indicator of ancient woodland.

Meadowsweet 'root beer'

We collected some meadowsweet on a walk in the woods yesterday and made some delicious 'root beer' with it. The blossoms steeped in boiling water and sweetened with brown sugar and lime juice make a delicious refreshing drink for this warm weather.
WARNING if you don't like root beer you wont like this it does have that germaline/wintergreen/toothpaste taste but we like it.
